UGC or University Grants Commission is a statutory body of the Government of India. It was formally established in November 1956 through an Act of Parliament. UGC is vested with two core responsibilities - Provision of funds and maintenance of predetermined standards of university education. UGC's operations are decentralised. While the head office is located in New Delhi, the regional centres are located at Bangalore, Bhopal, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune. 

The Southern Eastern Regional Office (SERO) was established in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh on 20 September 1994. The states assigned to UGC’s South Eastern Regional Office are Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Pondichery (Puducherry) and Tamil Nadu. The total number of colleges under SERO is 668.

The Western Regional Office (WRO) is located in Pune, Maharashtra. It was established on 11 November 1994. The states assigned to UGC's Western Regional Office are Gujarat, Maharashtra, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Goa. Currently, 996 colleges are covered under UGC's Western Regional Office (WRO).

UGC's Central Regional Office or UGC's CRO was established formally in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The date of establishment was 01 December 1994. As per the latest available information, 791 colleges are covered by UGC's Central Regional Office (CRO).

Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have a dedicated UGC Regional Office at Guwahati, Assam. The North - Eastern Regional Office (NERO) was formally established on 01 April 1995. 253 Colleges are covered under the North Eastern Regional Office.

Kolkata, West Bengal is the regional headquarters for the Eastern Region. UGC's Eastern Regional Office (ERO) was established on 03 September 1996. UGC's website confirms that over a thousand colleges - 1009 to be precise, are covered by UGC's Eastern Regional Office (UGC - ERO). The ERO covers colleges in West Bengal, Orissa (Odisha) and Sikkim.

UGC's South Western Regional Office (SWRO) was established on 25 April 1999 at Bangalore, Karnataka. It covers all colleges (714, at last count) in Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.


Lastly, UGC's Northern Regional College Bureau (NRCB) covers 922 colleges in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Himachal Pradesh (HP), Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh (UP). The Northern Regional College Bureau is headquartered in New Delhi.

How do I verify a candidate's UGC NET Certificate?

University Grants Commission (UGC) allows employers to verify if the UGC NET (e-certificate) or UGC NET certificate is genuine. As a candidate, however, one cannot request for verification.

Please make an online request here. You would be asked to enter the details mentioned below - 

1. UGC NET Candidate's Roll Number;
2. Candidate's Date of Birth (DOB);
3. UGC NET Examination Year (2010 or after 2010);
4. UGC Reference Number;
5. UGC NET e-Certificate / Certificate Number;

UGC will also require additional details which pertain to the verifier. Before you proceed, keep the following handy -

1. Verifier's Name;
2. Verifier's Designation;
3. Verifier's Organisation Name;
4. Complete Mailing Address of the Institute/University/College/Organisation;
5. Verifier's e-mail ID;
6. Verifier's Mobile/Cellphone Number;

Upon successful application, UGC would then process the request and dispatch the verification letter through post.
